“We combine what may seem disparate – classical and jazz”
Our repertoire is a meeting of genres and aesthetics – from music by contemporary composers to our own improvisation, not only a bridge between eras, but above all a dialogue between the world of contemporary composers (which makes up 80% of the program!) and our own improvisation.
Each concert is a journey where classical music intertwines with the freedom of jazz, and the notes become a space for storytelling – about passion, emotion, and the art of bridging two worlds.
Through the sounds of great composers and improvisation, we tell the story of what matters most to us – our shared passion and the constant discovery of new meanings in music

BIO HAŁAT ENSEMBLE
Hałat Ensemble consists of Marcin Hałat – a violinist and improviser working at the intersection of classical, improvised, and jazz music – and Aleksandra Hałat – a pianist, chamber musician, and pedagogue, interested in experimental repertoire and interpretation. They perform together as Hałat Ensemble, but do not limit themselves to traditional classical music; instead, they combine interpretations of classical works with improvisation, often crossing genre boundaries.
The only violin-piano duo in Europe
that bridges two musical art forms and collaborates with visual artists and dancers, creating interdisciplinary projects.
Hałat Ensemble, Dr Aleksandra Hałat and Dr Marcin Hałat, is both a musical ensemble and a team of researchers and lecturers at the University of Silesia in Katowice, dedicated to rediscovering the beauty of forgotten works by Polish composers. Since 2020, they have been engaged—broadly understood—in popularization and research projects devoted to the works of émigré composers such as Karol Rathaus, Jerzy Fitelberg, Tadeusz Zygfryd Kassern, and Roman Palester.
They have released world premiere recordings for the DUX label: *Karol Rathaus – Piano Trios* (DUX, 2021), *Karol Rathaus – Chamber Works* (2022), and *Jerzy Fitelberg – Works for Violin and Piano* (2024). They have participated in festivals including the Rathaus Festival (2022) in New York, Polin Music Festival (2023), the Karol Szymanowski Music Festival in Zakopane (2023), and the Brundibár Arts Festival in the UK. They perform both in Poland and abroad as a duo and independently with other artists
They are recipients of scholarships from the National Institute of Music and Dance under the “Białe Plamy” program (2023) and WarszeMuzik (2025).
Currently, they are developing a joint project *Call for New*, whose main aim is the audio-video recording of works by contemporary Polish and international composers, as well as the promotion of compositions dedicated to Hałat Ensemble.Hałat Ensemble collaborates with renowned visual artists, including Kaja Renkas and Iwona Pomianowska.
They run the Karol Rathaus Festival Foundation and serve as curators of the classical and improvised music festival Open Classics Festival in the Beskids, Poland.
PROJECTS
POLISH MUSIC
A bold journey through Polish musical heritage, where tradition meets a fresh, contemporary voice. Familiar sounds are reimagined with energy, depth, and a modern perspective.
Classic Meets Improvisation
Where written music becomes a living dialogue and improvisation breathes new life into classical forms. Precision and freedom collide, creating music that is spontaneous, daring, and deeply expressive.
Espresso in 3 Colors
A vibrant project blending three musical cultures: American, French, and Polish. Like a strong espresso, it delivers intensity, contrast, and a bold fusion of styles.
Past and Present Exiled Women Composers
A musical portrait of women shaped by migration, movement, and the search for belonging. Their voices tell stories of identity, resilience, and creativity across borders and generations.

ORDER KAROL RATHAUS ENSEMBLE CDS WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF HAŁAT ENSEMBLE

„This is certainly one of those recordings that serious musicians will reach for and want to own. Great praise goes not only to the musicians, but also to the engineers who recorded these trios with a good, forward positioning of the microphones, but also with a nice, natural reverberation around the instruments. Very good job!”
Lynn René Bayley / THE ART MUSIC LOUNGE
„The world premiere by the Karol Rathaus Ensemble, sublime with an analytical and airy sound recording, is based on unedited manuscripts. Perfect in its balance, sensitivity and fervor, we regret that this wonderful testimony lasts so short and we hope for its soon continuation.”
Florestan de Maruca verde / Click Musique
“A very important element in the presentation of both forgotten chamber works by Rathaus are the Karol Rathaus Ensemble, excellent instrumentalists, thanks to whom this music reaches us in the best possible form.”
LongPlay
“The Karol Rathaus Ensemble consisting of Aleksandra Hałat (piano), Marcin Hałat (violin), Marcin Mączyński (cello) and Piotr Lato (clarinet) deliver a reference recording in their passionate, but also wisely arranged performance.”
Dr. Thorsten Stegemann / Kultur Abdruck
“These two gripping and fascinating scores are performed with contagious enthusiasm. The musicians show true love and commitment to music. They were well balanced during the recording process and the captured sound is perfect. It’s a pity that the duration of the album is only 47 minutes.”
